Barnsley

Steve Ruffle

I would like to re-apply for this position as the VCS rep for Barnsley on the South Yorkshire Migration Group for 2026-27.  With the support and mentoring of Migration Yorkshire, I have now developed a good understanding of the sector and excellent working relationship with reps from other areas.

I am the secretary of Barnsley Borough City of Sanctuary, (BBCoS) which is fully run by volunteers. I have been secretary for two years, expanding our volunteer base and involve those with lived experience centrally in what we do. I have led on a number of cohesion events and activities in Barnsley during the last year including facilitating a Celebrating our Communities event in November 2025 and overseeing a plethora of activities in Barnsley during Refugee Week  2026. We work very closely with Refugee Council (BRAP Project) who’s staff provide us with considerable support.  I have a good working relationship with staff at Barnsley CVS and Barnsley Borough Council. I believe partnership working to support refugees and asylum seekers is presently effective in Barnsley due to effective partnership working.  I am also actively involved in Penistone Refugee and Asylum Support Group

I have experience of working at strategic level in my working life. I have tried to keep up to date with knowledge of issues facing all migrants attending training and workshops organised by yourselves, BMBC, Care4Calais, Right to Remain, Asylum Matters, Migrants Organise and many national and regional City of Sanctuary events and meetings. I have attended and been involved in supporting Migration Yorkshire’s annual VCS networking day. I have a good working relationship with colleagues at Sheffield City of Sanctuary, Rotherham Ethnic Minority Alliance (REMA) and South Yorkshire Migration Action Group (SYMAAG).

I would take on the core responsibilities listed in the role description, attend the meetings as required on behalf of the VCS and would respect confidentially of information when required.
