Barnsley City of Sanctuary is a local volunteer-run group working to make our borough a welcoming, safe place for people who have fled war, persecution, or hardship in search of peace and dignity.
We are part of the national City of Sanctuary movement — a network of ordinary people and local organisations across the UK who believe that compassion and inclusion make communities stronger.
What We Do
We work with individuals, community groups, schools, charities, and public services to create a culture of welcome across Barnsley. Our activities include:
- Providing practical support for people seeking asylum or refuge — this can include signposting, advocacy, or simply a listening ear.
- Running awareness events and workshops to help the wider community understand the realities of the asylum system and challenge harmful myths.
- Celebrating diversity and contributions — we highlight the skills, talents and resilience that people seeking sanctuary bring to our town.
- Campaigning peacefully for fair and humane treatment of asylum seekers, and speaking out against discrimination or hostility.
- Supporting local organisations — we help schools, libraries and others learn how they can be more inclusive. If they choose, they can work toward a Sanctuary Award, which recognises their efforts to be welcoming and supportive to all, including those seeking safety.
How We Work
We are a volunteer-led, non-profit organisation, open to everyone who shares our values. Many of our members have personal experience of the asylum process and are central to how we plan and run our activities. You can read our constitution here.
We meet regularly, share decisions openly, and work in partnership with others across Barnsley, including the council, faith groups, community centres, and charities.
We receive no special privileges, and we do not make or enforce immigration policy. Our goal is simple: to treat people with dignity, and to help Barnsley be a place where everyone feels safe and welcome.
