In Autum 2024, two groups of local newcomers to Barnsley and Penistone participated in WAYFINDERS as part of the government’s Know Your Neighbourhood scheme.
WAYFINDERS is a creative practice, designed by Grant Lowe and Deborah Templeton, which combines walking trails, artistic maps, photography and text to support participant engagement in their environments.
The groups in Barnsley and Penistone were each introduced to the history of their new town through a specially designed art-map which unlocked some of the local stories. Then, they were invited to creatively map those places for themselves, exploring and deepening their relationship to their new homes through photography, writing, and collaging.
